The Colors of Fall

A study in warmth, depth, and the beauty of changing seasons…

As the days grow shorter and the light begins to soften, fall brings with it a naturally rich and layered palette. From deep olive and warm ochre to muted rust and earthy browns, the colors of the season have a way of making interiors feel warmer, more grounded, and inviting.

At Jessica Margot Design, we love exploring these tones not as seasonal trends, but as timeless tools for creating atmosphere. A color can completely shift the feeling of a room — and even the smallest variation in tone can make a meaningful difference.

Here are a few of the fall-inspired hues we’re drawn to this season.

A warm toned living room with a rust colored armless chair and sofa with green and patterned pillows, a textured white rug, built in bookcase next to a stone fireplace and window treatments with a stucco ceiling.

Rich Rust

Warm, earthy, and full of character, rust brings an immediate sense of warmth to a space. Depending on the undertone, it can range from a soft terracotta to a deeper, more saturated burnt orange.

We love using rust in upholstery, textiles, and accent pieces where it can add richness without overwhelming a room. Paired with natural wood, cream, or softer neutrals, it feels collected and sophisticated.

The feeling: Warm, welcoming, and grounded.

Golden Ochre

Ochre offers the warmth of yellow with a more muted, earthy quality. It can bring energy into a room while still feeling refined and understated.

A softer ochre works beautifully on walls or larger upholstered pieces, while deeper golden tones can be introduced through pillows, art, or accessories. Against rich woods and warm neutrals, ochre adds a subtle glow.

The feeling: Optimistic, warm, and quietly vibrant.

Deep Olive

One of our favorite ways to bring the feeling of the outdoors inside, olive green has a natural depth that works beautifully across a range of interiors.

From soft, dusty olive to darker moss and forest-inspired tones, green can create a sense of calm while adding visual richness. We especially love it alongside stone, aged metals, warm woods, and natural textures.

The feeling: Serene, organic, and timeless.

Plum & Burgundy

For something moodier, deep plum and burgundy introduce a sense of drama and intimacy. These colors become particularly beautiful as the light changes throughout the day, revealing different undertones and depths.

Used thoughtfully, a deep wine tone can make a room feel enveloping rather than heavy — whether through a velvet chair, a painted wall, a patterned textile, or a small accent.

The feeling: Moody, intimate, and sophisticated.
